Como tantas outras vezes, ouvi aqui os primeiros sons de "Untrue", o novo disco de Burial. Pela amostra que o Francisco escolheu, deu para perceber que o disco é sublime, o que a audição da obra completa manifesta descaradamente. E deixem-me que vos diga que "sublime" é uma das palavras que caem bem junto a Burial. Aquela música é "muito grande". Há ali também um processo de sublimação - uma passagem do estado sólido ao gasoso, atmosférico, sem estado intermédio. A vida - no caso feita dos personagens que povoam a urbe londrina, a paisagem -, transformada em memórias dispersas num vapor que se sente. O nome por detrás de Burial permanece ainda hoje, dois álbuns depois e muita aclamação - a Wire considerou o primeiro disco, "Burial", o melhor de 2006 -, desconhecido. Só fica a música. O essencial.

"The World Won't Listen", compilação que reúne "singles" e "b-sides", é um título delicioso. Tanto remete para a ideia de que "o mundo não vai ouvir, não vai prestar atenção, ninguém vai ligar", como para uma outra aparentada, que se pode traduzir por: "Ninguém vai ouvir. Por isso, podes falar, podes confessar o teu segredo, revelar essa coisa íntima." Isto para dizer que tanto uma como outra ideias assentam na perfeição às Miss Tapes. Daí a substituição do linear "mixes for blue girls and blue boys" por este polissémico "the world won't listen". Et voilá.

Ao longo dos últimos dias, tem sido impossível ouvir ou descarregar Miss Tapes. A causa parece estar numa manutenção interminável que o sítio podomatic tem levado a cabo. Neste momento, apenas no sítio Miss Tapes A se encontram disponíveis podcasts, sendo que os conteúdos dos restantes cinco desapareceram. Já procurei saber o que aconteceu junto da administração do sítio podomatic, mas nenhuma resposta útil me foi dada.
Adenda no dia 16: o sítio podomatic terminou a manutenção. Perdi a maior parte das edições que estavam nas Miss Tapes B, C, D e E. Durante os próximos tempos vou dedicar-me a fazer uploads para um sítio mais seguro e a esperar que isto não se repita.

Durante uns tempos, chamou-se John Walker. Formou os Walker Brothers juntamente com Gary e Scott. A história é mais ou menos conhecida. De êxito atrás de êxito ("The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore", "Make it Easy on Yourself", "Another Tear Falls", etc.) até à banda se desintegrar, muito à custa das maiores ambições de Scott Engel, doravante apenas conhecido como Scott Walker - o nome de uma família que nunca o fôra. Scott prosseguiu e gravou álbuns a solo, afastando-se da pop ora luminosa, ora melosa dos Brothers, ensombrado por Jacques Brel e por Ingmar Bergman. Gravou discos até 1974. Depois esteve dez anos no silêncio, mas nem por isso as pessoas o esqueceram. Contaram-se histórias de álcool, drogas e reclusão em mosteiros. Voltou momentaneamente ao mundo dos vivos em 1984 com o disco "The Climate of the Hunter", mas um novo interregno, desta vez de onze anos, haveria de acontecer. Em 1995, surgiu com "Tilt". A história que se seguiu é mais ou menos conhecida.
Não sei se Jonh Maus passou pelo mesmo ou por algo parecido com o que Scott passou. Parece. A história é mais ou menos desconhecida. Seja lá o que isso quer dizer, Maus é o único membro dos Walker Brothers que não tem direito a uma entrada na Wikipedia. Aparentemente vive no Hawaii e está para lançar o disco "Love is Real". A sua música, que toca na Miss Tape #41, convoca traços da pop cândida dos Walker Brothers e daquele tempo (anos 60 e 70), mas há uma atmosfera carregada, sintetizadores pesados que se distendem e distorcem, uma voz distante e ao mesmo tempo profunda. Estranheza.
Não sei por que vias, uma suposta carta escrita por uma antiga namorada de Maus foi publicada na Internet. A missiva, um objecto de grande ressentimento, é, curiosamente, um dos únicos que pode ser encontrado acerca de Maus na grande rede. Um primor no amor, este John. Inesquecível:
"You were a horrible boyfriend, abusive, manipulative, a liar, pitiful in your existence, and NO you didn't encourage me but rather saw some thing in me that you felt the NEED to chip away at, a constant chipping away of my soul. [...] Your words, the one source of power you have, are hollow and impotent because you are crippled, unable to act on your words. Your actions or rather non-action blow your words into dust. Barely barely barely did you ever do anything for me while we were together that revealed a concern you might have for my happiness. Even a small instance like requesting a candied apple, a treat, provoked in you a need to make some insulting remark towards me equating me with a dog."

De Portugal trago sensações. Quando souber o que querem dizer esperarei saber o que fazer com elas. É sempre assim.
Por ironia (ou não), em Portugal vi um filme asiático que é um dos mais bonitos que alguma vez vi - “Primavera, Verão, Outono, Inverno... e Primavera”, do sul-coreano Kim Ki-duk. Andava eu a tentar explicar aos amigos em Portugal a poesia na natureza asiática, e dou com este filme que me deixou sem palavras (para quê?). E também por ironia (ou não), volto a lembrar-me no regresso a casa que, em português, o título de “Lost in Translation” é “O Amor é um Lugar Estranho”.
Tempo para estar com o Francisco. O que posso acrescentar ao que ele já disse? Só dizer que estamos do mesmo lado. Do lado em que, por causa e apesar de tudo, acreditamos. Acreditamos ainda. A primeira vez que "ouvi" Lee Hazlewood foi através dos Slowdive, que têm uma versão devidamente nebulosa de "Some Velvet Morning". Anos mais tarde, depois de descobrir os Tindersticks, haveria de chegar até aos originais de uma das grandes inspirações (senão a maior) dos ingleses. Lee Hazlewood morreu no sábado passado. Estava doente. A iminência da morte fê-lo gravar há pouco tempo um disco que anunciara já como "o último". Pode-se aprender alguma coisa sobre o grande compositor aqui.

In an interview last autumn, Jeremy Greenspan recalled how the Junior Boys were originally built to appeal to the particular tastes of a good friend. The band's initial jumpstart, he said, came from the simple notion to note the co-ordinates of that friend's favorite sounds and then try to make music that felt like it was somehow at the center of them all. As band manifestos go, it's as reasonable as any other; it's more interesting to be adored by one than liked by many.
Ainda os 23 anos da Íntima Fracção. O Francisco Mateus, profissional e amante da Rádio, é ouvinte da IF desde 1987, e tem uma relação de proximidade com o Francisco Amaral, com quem, de resto, chegou a partilhar o estúdio. Também por isto é importante ler o que o Francisco escreveu agora e o que escreveu há mais tempo, mas que ele recorda no seu blogue. Fica aqui um excerto de um texto sobre o momento em que o Francisco Mateus ouviu pela primeira vez a Íntima Fracção. Acho que muita gente se pode rever nele.
"Uma noite de inverno, fria. À luz fluorescente de uma cozinha, um rádio está ligado em cima do frigorífico. Passa da meia-noite. Os vidros molhados do lado de dentro da marquise de alumínio revelam a diferença de temperatura entre o interior acolhedor da cozinha e o lado de fora da casa. No acolhimento caseiro estão mãe e filho, um jovem adolescente com cerca de quinze anos. O resto da família já dorme. O prédio está em silêncio. A romper suavemente o silêncio da noite está um som transmitido pela rádio. Um som diferente. Um soar de saxofone, envolvente, ele próprio envolto por uma space-guitar."
Ainda está em fase experimental e o ritmo das publicações não será o mesmo das Miss Tapes. Pouco mais será o mesmo, de resto. Apenas o mesmo respeito e paixão pela música. Pela música que na sua aparente simplicidade nos transporta até às fundações. In the beginning there was rhythm. Depois também. Enjoy.

Passam hoje 23 anos desde que a Íntima Fracção pôde ser ouvida pela primeira vez por uma audiência. Na noite de 8 de Abril de 1984, na Antena 1, Francisco Amaral realizava a primeira de inúmeras emissões que se prolongam até hoje. E até hoje permanece a dificuldade em catalogar o que o Francisco, religiosamente, faz todas as semanas. Pode-se dizer que é um programa de rádio ou especificar que é um "programa de autor", que fica ainda uma sensação de que estamos longe de compreender a verdadeira natureza da Íntima Fracção. Como se a Íntima fosse só isso. Não é. Mas, na verdade, não é difícil perceber o que é, realmente, a Íntima Fracção. Todos somos marcados por ínfimas fracções eo truque é sentir. Neste caso, escutar. Não esperem que vos diga mais. Ouçam bem. Parabéns, Francisco.

Do orgulho
Além de um enorme talento, o Francisco tem uma generosidade que nunca mais acaba. A última edição da Íntima Fracção é linda até se só lermos a lista das músicas e dos sons, e por aqui nem há palavras para agradecer a "longínqua inspiração". Ela vem e vai nos dois sentidos. Um orgulho.
