80 é um bom número para parar.

Já noutras ocasiões as Miss Tapes foram suspensas, mas desta vez um novo motivo subjaz. Sinto, pela primeira vez, pouco entusiasmo em me lançar em novas edições destas cassetes imaginárias. Será um entusiasmo talvez proporcional àquele que tem sido despertado na audiência. Acredito que uns quantos indefectíveis ainda aqui venham à espera de algo, mas já há algum tempo que existe um silêncio e uma quietude maiores.

Não me interpretem mal: continuaria a gravar Miss Tapes nem que houvesse apenas um único ouvinte. Mas sem ânimo não valeria a pena.
E é com esse pensamento que as Miss Tapes hão-de voltar numa outra vida, talvez com outro nome, ou talvez não. Talvez com os sons de sempre, talvez com os sons que nunca aqui passaram. Não sei dizer.

Este número 80 é breve, como sinceramente espero que seja o tempo que durará até voltar o entusiasmo e a musica prosssiga o seu caminho.

Há muito tempo que este projecto andava na minha cabeça, mas só agora ganhou forma. Deep Mode reúne "mixes" de música que vibra com palavras como "viagem", "sonho", "hipnose", "ritmo", "balanço", "espaço" e "movimento".
Deep Mode será uma espécie de "lado b" virtual das Miss Tapes. Ou uma sombra (coberta por reflexos de bola de espelhos).
Músicas alinhadas seguindo uma narrativa e um instinto para ouvir com um só pensamento: "Groove is in the heart".

Ao alto, a foto que será a imagem Deep Mode. Foi tirada há um ano, em Hanói.

Os amanhãs que cantam nunca chegaram a abrir a boca. Como é sabido, em vez de cantigas vieram lamentos. Pareceram infindáveis até um certo ponto e depois cristalizaram-se na desilusão.
Aos amanhãs que cantam só se pode regressar, como quem afaga uma memória; nunca encontrá-los no futuro. Estarão condenados a ser mais um eterno retorno. E voltamos, apenas em visita e sem planos.
Quando o fazemos enlevados pela música a experiência torna-se das mais sublimes. É isso que o Francisco Amaral proporciona nesta Íntima Fracção.

O ano é 1998. Em Portugal, vivem-se tempos de optimismo. A Exposição Universal de Lisboa vai acontecer, revelando uma face renovada, enxuta, ao Mundo. O barril de petróleo custa 20 dólares. O clima é de apaziguamento e tudo parece correr de feição.
Nas madrugadas de segunda-feira da antiga TSF, a música era luminosa. Um traço azul riscando o céu. A esperança dava na esterofonia, entrava pelos ouvidos e fazia sonhar. It was a very good year, diria Sinatra.

Nesse ano entrei para a universidade, obviamente sem saber que quando de lá saísse o país passaria por crises e mais crises. Um pântano, chegou a chamar-se. A situação agravou-se em 2003, depois de vários sinais a partir de 2001. Em 2005, bateu-se novamente no fundo. Hoje é o Mundo inteiro que ameaça com mais crises.
Foi há 10 anos, mas 10 anos - sabemos hoje - são muitos tempos. Resta a música que o Francisco alinhou nas medidas certas. O que resta dos nossos amores.

Há um disco novo dos Tindersticks, "The Hungry Saw", o que só por si deveria valer este ano da graça de 2008. Passaram cinco anos desde que o último álbum de originais, "Waiting for the moon", foi editado, e, depois de aventuras menos bem sucedidas a solo de Stuart Staples, não posso dizer que não temia que a desilusão viesse aí.
Há algo, contudo, que salva o dia: a habilidade para orquestrarem coros não se perdeu, e continuam a ser, depois de Leonard Cohen, os grandes utilizadores de coros femininos; assim de repente, parece que andaram a ouvir Stereolab; consta que não deram por terminada a carreira e melhores dias virão.

History repeats itself

A história da música é pródiga em exemplos de bandas injustamente ignoradas e esquecidas. Os suíços Double, sejamos justos, são apenas esquecidos, já que na sua época - início dos anos 1980 -, era difícil ignorá-los. Muita gente se lembrará de uma música - "Captain of her heart" -, que foi a um mesmo tempo a glória e a desgraça do duo. Viviam-se tempos em que os singles reinavam, nas rádios e nas televisões, com o nascimento em série de vídeos. Os Double não tiveram outro sucesso à altura de "Captain of her heart", e a história guarda-os como uma, mais uma, "one hit band". Talvez.
Mas a verdade é que a produção de grandes músicas começou antes e durou até depois de"Captain of her heart".
Também à semelhança de muitas outras bandas, os Double arriscaram estar à frente do seu tempo, o que normalmente é sinónimo de dissabores comerciais. Seja como for, nunca é tarde para os ouvir. Gabo-lhes ainda o fascínio que tinham pelo sudeste asiático, que pode ser descodificado em diversas alusões, de títulos a visuais, passando, obviamente, pela sonoridade.

The lost art of keeping a secret

Como tantas outras vezes, ouvi aqui os primeiros sons de "Untrue", o novo disco de Burial. Pela amostra que o Francisco escolheu, deu para perceber que o disco é sublime, o que a audição da obra completa manifesta descaradamente. E deixem-me que vos diga que "sublime" é uma das palavras que caem bem junto a Burial. Aquela música é "muito grande". Há ali também um processo de sublimação - uma passagem do estado sólido ao gasoso, atmosférico, sem estado intermédio. A vida - no caso feita dos personagens que povoam a urbe londrina, a paisagem -, transformada em memórias dispersas num vapor que se sente.
O nome por detrás de Burial permanece ainda hoje, dois álbuns depois e muita aclamação - a Wire considerou o primeiro disco, "Burial", o melhor de 2006 -, desconhecido. Só fica a música. O essencial.

"It's just the way I am. I can't step up, I want to be in the dark at the back of a club. I don't read press, I don't go on the internet much, I'm just not into it. It's like the lost art of keeping a secret, but it keeps my tunes closer to me and other people."

Stop me if you think that you've heard this one before

"The World Won't Listen", compilação que reúne "singles" e "b-sides", é um título delicioso. Tanto remete para a ideia de que "o mundo não vai ouvir, não vai prestar atenção, ninguém vai ligar", como para uma outra aparentada, que se pode traduzir por: "Ninguém vai ouvir. Por isso, podes falar, podes confessar o teu segredo, revelar essa coisa íntima."
Isto para dizer que tanto uma como outra ideias assentam na perfeição às Miss Tapes. Daí a substituição do linear "mixes for blue girls and blue boys" por este polissémico "the world won't listen". Et voilá.
